Chapter 238: Facing Katherine [3]
Chapter 238: Facing Katherine [3]
****
But unfortunately for both Katherine and Amon, the latter remained silent, unable to answer
her question.
After all, how could he?
What was he supposed to say?
That some freak had put him from another world into her brother's body who wasn't even alive anymore but she was still taking care of him, not knowing that he was always going to be in danger in every step of his life now?
That some freak had made her brother the herald of a goddess now and he now held a role just as if not more important than the main character himself?
The only thing that Amon could do was remain silent while offering a simple apology to her. "I'm sorry-"
But Katherine had enough of it as she slammed her first into his chest again, harder this time. "That's the only thing you say! That's what you always say!" She screamed into his chest, not able to control her emotions now.
Fortunately, Amon was able to quickly put a sound barrier around Lily to not wake her up.
Amon opened his mouth to speak but no words came out.
He was left utterly speechless by her retortion.
But contrary to him, Katherine wasn't done yet as well, giving him no chance to speak.
"Time and time again, you put yourself into the middle of danger, at the brink of losing your life. Time and time again, I'm left utterly helpless and crying like a child unable to even protect my little brother despite the power I possess, let alone the thousands of students as the student council president." She screamed again, having no restraint over anything now. It was clear that Amon's bland words had left her completely broken now.
And this brought immense pain to the young boy who was also left helpless in this case, unable to give her any proper reason for this all.
He wanted to tell the girl in front of him-who still thought he was her normal little brother- so badly but...
Alas, what could he do?
What hurt him the most inside was that this wasn't even the last of what was going to happen.
The future was uncertain, with multiple other situations like this going to happen to him surely, some pushing him to the brink of survival and life but...
What could he do? He was also that same young boy back from the library, trying his best to survive in this world and reach the end.
He was forced to accept the fact that this wasn't just his simple previous world anymore.
He could die at any given moment. Tortured or even blasted to death. Unlike the main cast, he had nothing to guarantee his safety beside his strength.
Strength which he strived for and was the only thing that could not only keep him but also his family safe. The reason why he ran after these quests and such tasks.
Only to get stronger and survive in this world. He had no grand plans to defeat the Ghoul Emperor or rule this continent.
Just like Klein, he just wanted to live a simple life in this world with his family now and reach the end safe and sound.
But of course, all of them were delusional fantasies he gave to himself to create a sense of security and hope.
For Amon, it was all written to him from the start.
However, he couldn't explain that to Katherine.
The only way he could even provide her a false reason for acceptance for all this was revealing it all to her. About who he was.
But....
Amon gritted his teeth silently, clenching his hands as he closed his eyes in pain.
'I'm sorry. I can't...'
"Tell me Amon..... what am I supposed to do? I can't live with you getting yourself hurt time and time again Amon!" Her voice turned desperate.
Katherine couldn't look up, hiding her pained eyes from Amon.
She wasn't sure that she could handle herself if she looked into his eyes.
Amon's expression contorted to suffering, every second of her pain turning into endless torture for him.
But...
Still, all he could do was remain silent, unable to reply to her, with anything.
The same words poured out of his mouth.
"I'm sorry....I-I don't know- " Amon struggled to reply to her properly.
But Katherine's interruption was clear and silent.
"Please stop..." Her grip tightened on his shirt.
A shudder passed through Amon's body as he froze and her tears continued.
"Please, just stop Amon...I can't bear through this all."
"I won't be able to handle you getting yourself involved in this again and again..."
Her pleas turned more desperate, more weaker.
"I can't see you in this state again and again... You are the only one I have. The only brother...
the only family..."
Amon's expression turned more painful and broken at the mention of family and brother.
How could he tell her that he also wanted for it to stop?
For just two of them to be able to live in peace?
Unfortunately, Katherine couldn't understand his internal struggles right now.
"So please....I beg you..."
She let go of her shirt, dropping down to her knees as she grabbed his legs.
And looked up for the first time, meeting his hurt black eyes.
And as Amon gazed into her broken brown eyes glistening with tears and filled with pain and
suffering, a soul shattering shudder passed through his body.
"On my knees to please promise me that you will stop..." She gripped his legs.
"That you will stop doing all this and putting yourself in danger. Just promise me this
brother. I can't lose you..." Her voice trailed off, unable to say anything anymore.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
And at the same time, a haunting realization through Amon's body.
'Ah.'
Another promise.
A promise to never do this again and stop involving himself in such dangers.
A promise from his dear sister who was begging him on her knees, staring up at him with her
suffering eyes.
It brought an eternal amount of pain to Amon as he stared down at her.
How many times has it been?
There was no doubt in his mind. It was a fatal promise.
If he couldn't promise this right now then he was sure that Katherine would break.
The relationship they had built over all this time, it would crumble into pieces.
Just like Elizabeth at that time...
Just like Amelia.
As much as Amon wanted to stay silent and not promise her this, he couldn't.
He was selfish, possessing a trait that every human did. Even Katherine.
Her desire to keep her brother out of danger and safe for herself and not lose him was selfish.
Elizabeth's desire to love him without considering his feelings and confessing like that was
her being selfish.
Every human was selfish.
Amon's desire to not reveal it all and continue his relationship with Katherine was his
selfishness.
And because of that very selfishness, he couldn't let her break. Not his only family in this
world.
Not the person for whom he was doing this all.
He couldn't even see her in a broken state let alone the matter of their relationship...
That was why...
Amon kneeled down, grabbing Katherine's hand and looking into her brown puffy eyes
through his black eyes.
Yet again, he was going to be selfish.
Meeting her gaze, Amon's lips...
Spread ever so slightly into a simple smile.
"I understand what you want to say sister." He smiled, not breaking his gaze.
A painful flicker passed through his eyes but he quickly composed himself.
"I'm sorry for all the pain you had to suffer throughout this time."
Katherine's eyes flickered momentarily in a pinkish color.
A piercing pain traveled through his soul but he maintained himself again, pushing through it
all.
"I'm sorry for never taking into account your feelings and the pain you were feeling throughout this time, giving you plain excuses." He squeezed her hands, looking into her
eyes.
His smile spread further.
Katherine's eyes glowed pink again for a moment as she was left silent, nodding subtly.
"All this time, I was always pushing myself into danger, not knowing how you, as my sister,
were feeling but..."
He put one hand on her shoulder, squeezing it along with her hand.
How many times it was going to be now?
"I promise you, I won't ever put myself in any kind of danger or involve myself in this type of
situation anymore. I'll stop worrying about you and stop doing this all."
How many promises had he made now?
Elizabeth, Amelia and now even his dear sister.
It was breaking his soul and mind, but Amon had to push through, and that was what he did,
ignoring the pain and still smiling.
"Which is why, I ask you, to please forgive me for all that I did." He said, his voice trailing off.
And as he did, a silence settled into the room, with Katherine looking into his pained eyes.
But then, eventually, her lips spread into a thin, understanding and happy smile, with her
arms shooting forward and wrapping him into a hug again.
"Thank you..."
A needle piercing sting shot through his heart. "Thank you Amon. Thank you dear brother for promising me this." Her arms tighten around
Amon as relief creeped into her tone.
Amon's soul was breaking as broken tears threatened to leak through his eyes at what he had
done but he controlled himself.
Slowly, he raised his arms, wrapping them around Katherine, reciprocating the hug and
smiling back.
"I'm happy to see you happy again...dear sister."
It was a broken smile, a ridiculous smile, a smile that hid a million kinds of pain behind it.
A smile made of promises meant to be broken.
